Bad weather activities in Schladming: Excursion destinations in rainy weather.

When the weather isn't cooperating...

Today is one of those days when the mountains disappear into thick clouds and the rain taps quietly on the windowpanes - actually perfect for a relaxing day on vacation. It was already clear at breakfast: this won't be a day for hiking. But that's the great thing about this area - there's so much to discover even away from the mountains.

Here are a few tips from us for places to visit on rainy days.

All tested by the Apart4you team. For your benefit.

Mandlberggut Radstadt

Time to hit the road – or better yet, call a taxi so you can enjoy the ride without any compromises.

Once we reached the top, our first stop was the cozy mountain café – Doris’s homemade cakes and freshly brewed coffee were an absolute dream! After a friendly chat with Bernhard, the owner, we began our tour of the distillery. It was fascinating to see how much passion goes into creating those fine spirits. Of course, a little tasting was a must – and yes, a few bottles somehow made their way into our bag. A little holiday feeling to take home!

Before heading back, we browsed through Katharina’s natural cosmetics shop – wonderful scents, great products, all regional and made with love.

Back at our accommodation, we ended the day relaxing in our private sauna. Outside, the rain was still gently falling, but inside it couldn’t have been cozier. Amazing how lovely a gray day can be when you make the most of it!

Your questions about the Mandlberggut.
Our answers.

  • Is Mandlberggut open, if it rains?
Yes, Mandlberggut is open in all weather from Monday to Friday.

  • How long does the distillery tour last?
Depending on the tour you book, approximately 1 hour.

  • Does Mandlberggut have parking / dining options?
Yes, there is plenty of parking available, and the mountain café offers not only sweet treats but also savory and hot dishes.

Trautenfels Castle Museum

Perfect for a little trip back in time.

Even the journey there was an experience - the castle sits enthroned on a hill with an incredible view over the Enns Valley. Though the mountains were hidden behind fog today, the whole place had a very special atmosphere - somehow mystical.

Inside, an impressive exhibition on the natural and cultural history of the Liezen district awaited us. Interactive stations, fascinating objects, and lovingly designed rooms – history really comes alive here. I found the mix of old traditions and modern approaches particularly exciting. You can really tell how much heart and soul has gone into running this museum.

And it was so pleasant to just stroll through the old walls at my leisure, marveling and reading – without any time pressure. Afterwards, we treated ourselves to a hot cup of tea in the small café area while the rain continued to fall outside the castle walls.

My conclusion: Bad weather? There's no such thing – just new opportunities to experience your vacation from a different perspective.

Our answers.

Yes, admission is free for you with the Summer Card.

  • Can you get to Trautenfels Castle by public transport?
Yes. Take the train from Schladming to Stainach-Irdning. Continue with the Regio bus lines 940 or 941 to the Trautenfels Schloss stop. From here, it is a 5-minute walk.

  • Do you have to book a guided tour of Trautenfels Castle?
No. You can explore the castle on your own or take a guided tour.

Werfen Ice Cave

A trip to another world – in the middle of a mountain.

Perfect weather for a really special experience – something that couldn't have been more impressive even in sunshine: the world's largest ice cave!

The walk-up to the cable car station, then the ride on the cable car and finally the short ascent to the cave – all this builds anticipation for what is to come. Once at the top, we were rewarded with a spectacular view of the valley – the fog made it even more impressive.

Inside the cave, it became truly magical: as soon as you step into the dark corridors, you feel the coolness, the breath of millennia. Our tour began with the lighting of the carbide lamps – and suddenly bizarre ice formations, meter-high sculptures, and glittering walls of ice emerged from the darkness. It's hard to describe – a true wonder of nature!

Important: dress warmly! The temperature inside is around 0 degrees Celsius all year round.

Your questions about  Eisriesenwelt.
Our answers.

  • Can you visit the Eisriesenwelt in any weather?
Yes, the Eisriesenwelt is open in all weather conditions. Since you spend most of your time in the cave anyway, the weather conditions are not that important. But even on very hot summer days, a visit to the Eisriesenwelt is recommended.

  • What clothing should you bring for the cave tour?
Even in summer, temperatures in the Eisriesenwelt cave are below zero degrees Celsius, so it is essential to wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes.

  • Are dogs allowed in the Eisriesenwelt?
Dogs are allowed to enter the Eisriesenwelt, but the numerous steps in the cave make a visit less than ideal for four-legged friends.

If the weather ever puts a damper on your hiking plans, don’t let it get you down. Use the time for experiences like these - it's worth it!

Or just make yourself comfortable on the sofa - with a cozy blanket, a cup of tea, or a glass of Prosecco. Maybe you have a good book waiting for you, or finally have time to watch that series you never have time for at home. That's exactly what vacations are for.
