Dachstein Almabtrieb & Schottenrühren on the Walcheralm
Guests experience a genuine Almabtrieb and the Schottenrühren on the Walcheralm.
The days before the Dachstein's departure from the alpine pastures are once again transformed into a festival, the Schottenrühren... The last milk from the cows is no longer processed into cheese, but heated up on the stove, soured with buttermilk, and the curd cheese scooped into a linen cloth in the Schottwiege. The fresh curd remains in the cloth and is now stirred in a bowl. This requires many people to stir. Then the now fine, cold curd is sugared, refined with cinnamon and raisins.
The Schottenrühren is a farewell party with the wonderful sweet food, musicians come and the alpine people with the farmers, hunters and hikers let the alp summer come to an end. The next day, the alpine cows are crowned with the beautiful jewelry and taken down to the valley to the home farm.
Date for the Schottenrühren: The traditional Dachstein Almabtrieb begins on Friday, September 20, 2019, at 7:00 pm with the Schottenrühren on the Walcheralm.
On Saturday, the party starts at 9.00 am on the Walcheralm. The animals for the Almabtrieb will be decorated. Magnificent headdresses and big bells around the neck of the cows invite you to marvel at them. Starting point is the Walcheralm along the Dachsteinstraße up to the Walcherhof. Entertainment is provided at the "Hoamfoarfest" at the Walcherhof from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm.
Time for our gentle ruminants to return home and say goodbye to the soon snow-covered alpine pasture world until next summer.
